YUPRO earns profit, pursues partnerships for growth

YUPRO, a national staffing enterprise that places graduates and alumni of YearUp into contract and direct hire positions, achieved $4.6 million in sales in 2016, its second full year of operations. At this volume, YUPRO earned a modest profit, distributed to individual training sites through YearUp’s National Alumni Association.

YUPRO targets the IT and financial services industries, where contract employment is the norm. In all, YUPRO found employment for 178 young adults in 2016. Twenty percent were directly hired at salaries averaging $48,000, while 80% of candidates were placed into contract positions at an average wage of $22 per hour. Upon completing their initial 6-month contract period, 70% of these individuals converted to hire with client employers or were invited to extend their contract for an additional 6 months.

President and co-founder Kathy Hardy distinguishes YUPRO’s business approach as being “candidate facing.” YUPRO works to find client companies that are a good fit for YearUp graduates, in contrast with conventional staffing companies where job orders drive recruitment. To date, YUPRO has established agreements with over 100 employer partners across the US.

As YUPRO pursues additional growth, Kathy is positioning the business to be a direct hire fulfillment arm for other staffing companies in which YUPRO would supply their alumni, (diversity candidates) and split the permanent fee, typically 20% of annual salary.

YUPRO is also partnering with CareerWise Colorado to help implement a 10-year apprenticeship initiative for high school juniors and seniors, with a year one goal of 250 apprenticeships in five tech-related employment tracks – IT, Project Management, Financial Services, Data Analytics and Advanced Manufacturing. YUPRO will provide group sessions where students share their apprenticeship experience and learn about business communication and work readiness skills that will ensure successful entry into the world of work.
