EMBERS wins recognition, expands training services and impact

Congratulations to Marcia Nozick, founder and CEO of Alliance member EMBERS in Vancouver, British Columbia, selected for Business In Vancouver’s 2017 Influential Women in Business award!

The honor recognizes British Columbia’s most outstanding business women in private or public sector companies.

Since founding EMBERS Staffing Solutions in 2008, Marcia has guided this enterprise from a small operation to one that employs over 250 people each day and last year, generated revenues exceeding $7 million. Marcia attributes their success to an “incredible network of partners, supporters and friends” along the way, including fellow alternative staffing operators that continue to inspire and contribute ideas for business growth and process improvement.

EMBERS began investing in industry skills training in 2014 and last year spent $300,000 to help its staffing workers earn a variety of construction-related certifications to increase their earnings and advance on-the-job. The success of this practice has led contractor clients to request on-site training for other workers on their crews, and EMBERS is creating a training division to meet this rising demand.

In addition, the City of Vancouver has selected EMBERS to operate a “low barrier and income generation hub” on behalf of the Vancouver Urban Core Workers Association, which includes local businesses, nonprofits and individuals. The Hub’s services aim to enhance life skills support and workforce readiness programming for Downtown Eastside residents, and connect them with employment and income generation activities along the “Livelihoods Continuum,” which includes peer supported work, volunteering, supported self-employment, and flexible part-time and full-time formal employment.
