New Center at EMERGE fosters career pathways

Alliance member EmergeWORKS has a new, major resource to help candidates prepare for career pathways and offer business clients the advantage of reduced training costs for entry-level workers!

The EMERGE Career and Technology Center (ECTC) opened in March and provides a full suite of job readiness and job skills workshops under one roof. EMERGE’s staffing enterprise EmergeWORKS serves as both a training referral and job placement partner.

The ECTC’s skills training focus reflects unmet employer demand for workers qualified in property maintenance, machining, welding, IT and digital literacy. Job readiness courses provide soft skills training and include a New Beginnings Career Workshop and “Background Check to Paycheck” class that helps job seekers discuss their criminal history and interview with greater confidence.

Already during the past four months, about 170 people have participated in work readiness courses or skills training to prepare for in-demand careers. An additional 67 people have used the ECTC’s Digital Access Lab, a computer lab anyone can use to create resumes, search and apply for jobs.

Planning for the Center began in 2008, and attendees of our 2009 conference may recall touring the vacant North Branch Library building and hearing EMERGE’s goals to transform this historic landmark and connect greater numbers of adults and youth with higher wage careers through training and supportive services. The renovation involved a $6.5 million capital campaign and a 14-month construction process.

We congratulate EMERGE on realizing its vision to expand employment services in north Minneapolis and help local residents advance toward better jobs, better lives and better community!
