Uber Works staffing app launches in Chicago

Oct 16, 2019 No Comments by

In Chicago, Uber has launched Uber Works, an app designed to supply on-demand, blue-collar shift workers to area companies.

The new app screens and matches job seekers with openings for light industrial, food service and general labor work. Staffing business partner True Blue is serving as employer-of-record to handle payroll and benefits, including same-day pay, through its new venture PeopleWorks. TalentBurst is also partnering with Uber to provide employer-of-record services.

Uber Works will charge businesses a variable rate for the jobs it fills “based on how quickly the shifts need to be filled, qualifications required and other factors,” NPR reports.

On the worker side, Uber is partnering with Arizona State University (ASU) Online to offer access to online classes for workers on the platform. In addition, Uber is partnering with local organizations, including YWCA Metropolitan Chicago, to “help support access to work across all Chicago communities,” provide skills training and help with workforce reentry.

Uber’s blog about the Uber Works launch offers more information about the company’s vision for this tech offering. Future plans to expand to other markets are not clear.
